So it's 2022 and Tom Cruise is still trying to find a way to kill himself. The Mission Impossible franchise hasn't got him (...yet), so it's back in the cockpit for a Top Gun sequel 36 years in the making.
And....Cruise may have saved cinema.
This is one of the most exciting and entertaining action movies of the last twenty years, not to mention one of the best sequels ever made. Is it predictable? Yes. Unbelievable? Yes. Do I care? NOOOOOO. This is pure unadulterated fun, with low stakes, immersive action and a cast of charismatic characters worth watching. The new generation of Miles Teller and Glen Powell bring the hot-headed machismo from the first, but you're watching for Cruise.
He remains the last true Western action star willing to do anything for the perfect shot, and as he blasts through the sound barrier while performing a perfect inverted barrel roll with 'Dangerzone' ripping in the background, you can't help but think...THIS is a real superhero movie.
